In Our Dreams We See The Sun
—
In Our Dreams We See the Sun emerges from my experience of landscape as a multidimensional space that unfolds across physical, inner, and spiritual realms. Through layered works, the paintings explore how landscapes, both external and internal, shape memory, identity, and belonging.
This relationship begins with the physical landscape, which is embedded directly into the works through the use of earth pigments sourced from the land. Painting with these materials creates a tangible connection to place, allowing the terrain itself to become part of the image.
From this grounded materiality, the work extends inward. The inner landscape emerges through process, as each painting undergoes cycles of building and excavating layers. This approach reflects the way memory and experience accumulate and erode over time, with strata that both reveal and conceal what lies beneath.
At the same time, a spiritual dimension unfolds through colour. The interplay of yellow, ochres, and earthen reds carries cultural resonance connected to my Cambodian heritage, while also evoking themes of hope, persistence, and renewal.
The works hold landscape as both site and witness, where personal and collective memory continue to surface and shift.
