In Our Dreams We See the Sun
In Our Dreams We See the Sun reimagines landscape as a multidimensional experience that unfolds across physical, inner, and spiritual realms. Through layered works, the paintings explore how landscapes—both external and internal—shape memory, identity, and belonging.
The physical landscape appears through the use of earth pigments sourced directly from the land. Painting with these materials creates a tangible connection to place, allowing the terrain itself to become part of the work.
The inner landscape emerges through the artist’s process. Each painting undergoes cycles of building and excavating layers, reflecting the way memory and experience accumulate and erode over time. These strata hold both presence and absence, revealing and concealing fragments beneath the surface.
The spiritual landscape speaks through colour, particularly in the interplay of yellow, ochres, and earthen reds. These hues carry cultural resonance connected to the artist’s Cambodian heritage while reflecting themes of hope, persistence, and renewal.
Together the paintings act as vessels for personal and cultural memory, reflecting on how landscape can hold both individual and collective experience.
